A Walpole block gives you old growth forest on one side, sheltered inlet water on the other, and national park around nearly all of it. Walpole sits 423 kilometres south-south-east of Perth on WA’s south coast, 66 kilometres west of Denmark, in the Shire of Manjimup. European settlement began in 1909 and the township was gazetted in 1933. The town stands near the northern point of the 100 hectare Walpole Inlet and takes its name from it. Walpole-Nornalup National Park, formally established in 1957 and covering 194 square kilometres, runs out to the coast.

Buildable land is limited here. National park, marine park and the 3,633 square kilometre Walpole Wilderness Area of jarrah, red tingle and karri forest wrap much of the locality, so the blocks that do exist are heavily treed. At the 2021 Census there were 429 residents and 425 private dwellings, so a good share are holiday homes. On treed land like this, your bushfire attack level is worth checking early, because it sets the construction standard your home has to meet.

Our designs suit ground like this. A raked ceiling, one that follows the line of the roof, lifts light into a shaded block, a skillion roof sits low on an inlet-fringe lot, and living areas turn to the water without losing the northern sun. Nornalup is Walpole’s nearest neighbour to the east, on the Frankland River, and the shire boundary runs between the two. It has its own page on our site.

Buildable land there is river frontage and treed rural holdings. The Rivergums Skillion suits a river-facing site and The Forest View suits a treed one.

North Walpole is the locality directly north of the townsite, close enough that the town’s shops and the Bibbulmun Track are minutes away. Its rural and rural-residential holdings sit on the cleared pockets among the trees.

These are the most workable blocks in the area, but the trees still shape the footprint. The Bushland Retreat or The Tingle View both suit a treed rural-residential site.

Tingledale is one of the rural localities around Walpole, out in the forest and farmland pockets that sit between the townsite and the wilderness reserves.

Holdings out here run larger, with room for sheds and easy access. The Karridale Retreat or The Forest View suit treed land with space around the house.

Peaceful Bay is a small coastal settlement east of Walpole, one of the neighbouring localities along this stretch of the south coast.

On coastal ground, orientation and materials matter most. The Point View or The Rivergums Skillion suit a low, water-facing block.

Crystal Brook and Broke Inlet are Walpole’s western neighbours, out toward the far end of the Walpole Wilderness Area where reserve country takes up most of the land.

This far out, access and services need checking before anything else, and a full site assessment is the place to start. The Bushland Retreat suits a home set into the bush on a block that keeps its trees.

Bow Bridge is the locality on the road that runs the 66 kilometres between Walpole and Denmark, where the country opens into cleared farm pockets between the forest blocks.

That makes it one of the easier places nearby to find a level site. The Karridale Retreat or The Tingle View both work on open ground with forest behind.
