Hear their stories

For Troy, building a home was never just about creating a place to live. It was about designing a lifestyle that felt deeply connected to the landscape around it.

Surrounded by birds, towering trees and water, he envisioned a home where nature was always part of the experience. Having built before, Troy chose Rural Building Co once again to bring that vision to life. Working closely with New Home Consultant Brooke Leber, every detail was carefully considered, from the exposed timber beams and heated polished concrete floors to the feature fireplace, creating a home that feels warm, timeless and connected to its surroundings.

Recognised with the 2026 HIA Project Home of the Year award, this home reflects thoughtful design, sustainable living, and a genuine connection to the environment. More than an award-winning home, it’s a peaceful retreat where the beauty of the outdoors is woven into everyday life.

TroyOldbury

When they built their new home in Pemberton, Arthur and Melissa aspired to a home that aligned with how they relax, how they entertain, and how they enjoy each other’s company.

The couple are delighted the with the end result, and are grateful to The Rural Building Co. for bringing their dream to reality.

“They were friendly, kind and very supportive. I couldn’t ask for more,” Arthur says. “Would we do it again? Without a doubt.”

When asked what they enjoy about their new home, Arthur and Melissa explain that it’s a peaceful retreat in an idyllic part of the world.

“We wanted our home to be a place of tranquility,” Melissa says.

“We still wake up every morning and say this is fantastic,” Arthur adds. “You come to an environment like this, and you recognise that there’s so much more to life.”

Seeking a lifestyle immersed in nature, Darren and Michelle chose Parkerville, where they embraced a tree change that transformed their everyday.

Their vision for a life immersed in nature came alive with double balconies that seamlessly extend their living space into the treetops. Darren shared how effortless this dream became, thanks to an immediate connection with their designer. Their home is more than just a house; it’s a sanctuary bathed in natural light and wonderfully energy-efficient, yet it’s the surrounding embrace of nature—the land and its wild inhabitants—that truly defines their lifestyle.

This was paramount for them, and they tell us they absolutely love every moment of their new, nature-infused life.

Why Build In Katanning

Katanning sits on the Great Southern Highway, 290 km from Perth and 168 km from Albany, and it is the largest town in the Upper Great Southern. The name is thought to come from the Noongar word Kartannin, meaning big meeting place. About 3,637 people live in the town itself, and the saleyards 3 km out are the largest roofed sheep saleyard in the southern hemisphere.

That size shows in what the town offers. There is a senior high school and three primary schools, a hospital, an aquatic centre, a library, a public art gallery, and a retail district with more than 100 heritage-listed buildings and eight art murals around it. Health care, manufacturing and agriculture are the biggest employers across 1,807 jobs, and five decades of meat processing work have made Katanning one of the most multicultural communities in regional Western Australia.

A town block and a farm block are two different builds. On the grid, services are already at the boundary. On a paddock you sort access, power and water first, and the house has to stand on its own. We start both the same way, on the block itself.

Ewlyamartup

Lake Ewlyamartup, a 100 hectare recreation lake, sits 17 km east of Katanning on Langaweira Road. It has a boat ramp, picnic and barbecue facilities and toilets, and around 95 bird species have been recorded there.

Blocks out this way are rural rather than serviced, so power, water and access are the first three things to work out, well before the design. The Point View | Original is designed for a site with something worth looking at, and turns the main living areas towards the outlook.

Badgebup

Badgebup is one of the farming districts around Katanning, and the Badgebup church, built in 1922, is listed among the area’s heritage sites. The land around it is cropping and grazing country, the same mix that fills the Katanning saleyards.

On a paddock block the house stands on its own, so which way it faces, where the shade falls and where the wind comes from matter more than they do in town. The Country House | Classic is a farmhouse plan drawn for open land, and we set the orientation to suit your block before anything is priced.

Nyabing

Katanning-Nyabing Road runs out of town past the saleyards, 3 km from the centre, and on into the cropping and grazing country those yards are there to serve. Sheep sell on Wednesday mornings and anyone can watch from the viewing platform.

On a working property the house shares the block with sheds, yards and a driveway that already exists, so where it sits matters as much as what it is. The Kingston | Original is a smaller farmhouse plan that suits a property where the house is not the biggest building.

Woodanilling

Woodanilling has its own shire, one of the eleven local governments in the Great Southern, and Katanning is the town it looks to for the senior high school, the hospital and the main retail district.

That suits buyers who want land or a village block with a full-service town close by. We look at access and water early, because both feed straight into siteworks, the work to prepare your block before the build starts.

Tambellup

Tambellup is one of the two towns in the Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup, and another of the towns Katanning services. The farms around it run livestock and grow cereal crops, the mix the whole Great Southern economy is built on.

Our nearest office is Albany, two hours south of Katanning, and we are upfront about that. Every build starts with a full site assessment on the block itself, and we have been working across regional Western Australia since 1992.

Kojonup

Kojonup is about half an hour west of Katanning on Albany Highway, and a shire seat in its own right. The military barracks there, built in 1845, is the oldest building in the town and now holds a museum.

We cover both towns and the farming country in between. If you are weighing up a block in one against a block in the other, tell us about both, because the services at the boundary and the run in from the road often decide it.

Ewlyamartup, Badgebup, Nyabing, Woodanilling, Tambellup and Kojonup all sit inside the area we build in, and so does the farming country between them. Bring us a block in any of them and we will design a home that is yours, grounded in the Great Southern and built for the land it stands on.

Frequently Asked Questions about Building in Katanning

How much does it cost to build a home in Katanning?

The cost of building in Katanning depends on your design, your block and the siteworks it needs, meaning the work to prepare the block before the build starts. A serviced lot on the townsite grid and a paddock out of town are two different jobs, and getting power, water and access to a rural block is the part people underestimate. We understand how much a clear budget matters, so we start with a full site assessment and give you a detailed, transparent quote with no hidden costs before you commit.

Which areas around Katanning does The Rural Building Co. build in?

We build across Katanning and the wider Great Southern, including Ewlyamartup, Badgebup, Nyabing, Woodanilling, Tambellup and Kojonup. Our nearest office is Albany, two hours south, and every build starts with a full site assessment on your block. Katanning sits inside the service area we have covered since 1992, from Kalbarri in the north to Albany in the south.

What is different about building on a Katanning town block?

Lots inside town are fully serviced and sit on an established grid, so power and water are already at the boundary and the streets are made. That makes siteworks more predictable than they are on farmland. It also means your neighbours are close, so which way the house faces, where the living areas sit and where the windows go matter for privacy as much as for sun. Our Urban range designs, The Brookside and The Riverbend among them, are made for this kind of block.
