Kalgan Home Builders

Over 6,000 homes built since 1992. Here is why Kalgan families choose Rural Building Co.:

Both the Kalgan and the King rivers run into Oyster Harbour, and the acreage on the slopes above, is what brings people to Kalgan, north-east of Albany. On ground like that, the block’s orientation and its shelter matter as much as the view. An award-winning builder, proudly built by WA Country Builders (BC11422), The Rural Building Co. has designed for country blocks like these since 1992, from Kalbarri in the north to Albany in the south.

Hear their stories

For Troy, building a home was never just about creating a place to live. It was about designing a lifestyle that felt deeply connected to the landscape around it.

Surrounded by birds, towering trees and water, he envisioned a home where nature was always part of the experience. Having built before, Troy chose Rural Building Co once again to bring that vision to life. Working closely with New Home Consultant Brooke Leber, every detail was carefully considered, from the exposed timber beams and heated polished concrete floors to the feature fireplace, creating a home that feels warm, timeless and connected to its surroundings.

Recognised with the 2026 HIA Project Home of the Year award, this home reflects thoughtful design, sustainable living, and a genuine connection to the environment. More than an award-winning home, it’s a peaceful retreat where the beauty of the outdoors is woven into everyday life.

When they built their new home in Pemberton, Arthur and Melissa aspired to a home that aligned with how they relax, how they entertain, and how they enjoy each other’s company.

The couple are delighted the with the end result, and are grateful to The Rural Building Co. for bringing their dream to reality.

“They were friendly, kind and very supportive. I couldn’t ask for more,” Arthur says. “Would we do it again? Without a doubt.”

When asked what they enjoy about their new home, Arthur and Melissa explain that it’s a peaceful retreat in an idyllic part of the world.

“We wanted our home to be a place of tranquility,” Melissa says.

“We still wake up every morning and say this is fantastic,” Arthur adds. “You come to an environment like this, and you recognise that there’s so much more to life.”

Seeking a lifestyle immersed in nature, Darren and Michelle chose Parkerville, where they embraced a tree change that transformed their everyday.

Their vision for a life immersed in nature came alive with double balconies that seamlessly extend their living space into the treetops. Darren shared how effortless this dream became, thanks to an immediate connection with their designer. Their home is more than just a house; it’s a sanctuary bathed in natural light and wonderfully energy-efficient, yet it’s the surrounding embrace of nature—the land and its wild inhabitants—that truly defines their lifestyle.

This was paramount for them, and they tell us they absolutely love every moment of their new, nature-infused life.

Why Build In Kalgan

Kalgan sits on the Kalgan River about twenty minutes north-east of Albany, in the Great Southern. Upper Kalgan has its 1912 hall, and Lower Kalgan has a hall from 1954 and a bridge from 1912. Around 840 people live across the locality. The name comes from Kalganup, first recorded in 1831 and understood to mean place of many waters.

Blocks here are lifestyle acreage and working farmland, with the steeper treed sites above the river and some land backing onto the western part of Gull Rock National Park. That mix means the practical questions come first: how the driveway gets in, how far services run, and what the slope does to your siteworks, the work to prepare the block before the build starts.

Great Southern Grammar has been at Lower Kalgan since 1999, on Oyster Harbour where the river runs into it. The harbour is perfect for fishing and birdwatching, and we understand that the outlook is the whole reason for a block like this, so we design the living areas to make the most of it.

A working farm site and a river-slope lifestyle acreage need different things from the same floorplan, and every home we design is shaped around the block it sits on. Bring us the plan you like and we will adapt it to your ground at Kalgan, or anywhere in the Great Southern.

Our open display homes are The Yalyalup Retreat, at 83 Joseph Drive, Yalyalup, and The Darlington, at 81 Darlington Road, Darlington. Both are a drive north of Albany. The Yalyalup Retreat is the one for natural textures and considered detailing, and The Darlington shows the farmhouse look at full scale, which is the closer match for an acreage block.

Both displays show how a design responds to slope, orientation and local materials. Walking through one makes it easier to picture how a Rural Building Co. home would sit on a Kalgan river block before you commit to a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions about Building in Kalgan

Can you build on a sloping or treed acreage block in Kalgan?

Yes. Kalgan is river country north-east of Albany, so many blocks fall away toward the water and some are heavily treed, and those are exactly the sites we design for. Slope and trees both affect your siteworks, the work to prepare the block before the build starts, and access for deliveries is worth checking early on an acreage block. Our first step is a full site assessment. Before you commit to anything, you get a detailed, transparent quote with no hidden costs, so nothing about the block surprises you later.
