GreenSmart is the practical implementation of HIA's ‘PATHE’ ( Partnership Advancing The Housing Environment) initiative. Through the GreenSmart program, HIA is developing, demonstrating and promoting the technologies, design principles and practices that can improve significantly the quality of Australia's built environment.

GreenSmart is HIA's program to make housing that is more comfortable to live in over the life of the building while maintaining affordability. It is the housing sector's environmental plan of action. At a very practical level, GreenSmart aims to increase energy efficiency, minimise waste and encourage better environmental management at each stage in the manufacture, design and construction of today's housing.

At the Rural Building Company we understand and embrace the need for environmentally responsible housing.

The use of energy in the home is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from the Australian house-holds. The average house-hold’s energy use is responsible for about eight tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas, per year. Many of these emissions can be abated through more efficient use of energy in our homes.

That’s why we have adopted the HIA GreenSmart program and its philosophy of affordable, ‘green’, and clever housing for the 21st Century.

You’ll find all Rural Building Company homes now incorporate a range of ‘green’ design and product initiatives, from energy-efficient roofing design to AAA-rated water saving plumbing.
